MOTORISTS’ PLEDGE

| BADGE APPEARS ON CARS j ASSOCIATION IN BRITAIN Three large letters—A.M.A.—fixed I to a badge cut in the form of outI stretched silver wings will soon be seen on the bumpers, radiators and windscreens of private cars and lorries all over Britain, says a Scottish newspaper. The badge will distinguish the driver of the car as an abstaining motorist and a member ! of the Abstaining Motorists' Asso- , elation, and it is expected that 1000 j members will be enrolled in Scotland j during the year. ; The inauguration of the associal lion is the latest step in the drive to encourage—in the interests of public safety—abstinence among drivers of mechanically controlled vehicles. Before the association was formed last month in Newcastle, 220 motorists had already applied for membership, and since then hundreds more have joined in England. They are benefiting from it, because through the association they are obtaining special insurance j terms from their companies. I The Rev. Hassell Hanmer, general secretary of the Scottish Temperance Alliance, said that abstaining motorists were being allowed ap- ! proximately 10 per cent off their in- ! surance premiums. 1 -We have not canvassed for mem- ; bers in Scotland yet, and we have i not even established a Scottish committee of the association, but in spite i of this we have already 80 members. Within a month a territorial com- ; mittee will be formed and a push i will begin to enrol members.” j Mr Hanmer added that another aim ! of the association would be to en-

} courage among members the use of ! unlicensed hotels, restaurants and i boarding-houses throughout the country. T* facilitate this he said, i * special booklet with road maps i and a list of all recommended un- \ licensed premises as being prepared.
