Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 16 j One of the German bombers en- : gaged in raiding London yesterday ' fell victim to the gun of the British j steamer Port Auckland while she j was moving down the Thames. A j shell from the ship’s anti-aircraft 1 gun burst close underneath the bomber, which caught fire and crashed to the bank of the Thames. I One of the bomber’s crew was seen I to descend by parachute. J The Port Auckland is a twinj screw Port Line steamer of 8789 i tons, and is engaged in the sea ' trade linking Britain, America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. German reference to the raids yesterday has been scarce, but the Berlin radio reported that the concentration of aircraft defending London came as a surprise to the German . High Command. London’s New Way of Life London’s air raid shelters are increasingly assuming the appearance of well-organised dormitories.
A large degree of adjustment to the new way of life has been achieved, but the continuous morning alarm has brought new problems, necessitating the banks remaining ■ open for an hour after the normal | closing time for the purpose of payj ing out wages. Hundreds of patients, including j air-raid victims, have been transj ported from the south-east of Eng- ! land to quieter hospitals in York- ! shire.
