GREAT SAVING

TRANSPORT SERVICES REVIEWS BY AUTHORITY ESTIMATE FOR HAMILTON (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Friday Referring to his present activity in the review of licenses, the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan, said that thousands of gallons of petrol a month were being saved with the co-ordination of transport services. By the time his activities were finished a still greater saving in petrol might be made. He indicated that overlapping of transport in the dairy industry would soon receive attention. Mr Phelan said it had been found necessary to impose a 30-mile limit on the running of transport companies operating under contract, furniture carriers and firms using their own trucks to collect or distribute their own goods. The restriction meant that such operators desiring to make a journey beyond the 30-mile limit would have to make special application, and a license would be granted if the trip were warranted. Trips to Sport Fixtures “The review of passenger licenses will restrict operators from taking parties far afield to sports fixtures and other gatherings.” said Mr Phelan. Formerly they could go practically anywhere, and sometimes complaints were received that services, for which buses were contracted. were being neglected. Recently one company’s buses travelled 2500 miles in a week-end and used 250 gallons of petrol.” The zoning of the licensing district has also been carried out by Mr Phelan to prevent waste of petrol used by fruit and vegetable hawkers, aerated water manufacturers and bacon and small goods manufacturers, several of which distributed their goods in the same towns at the same time. Further, horse floats were not allowed to travel outside the province without special permission. Hamilton Merger Mr Phelan said the carrying service merger at Hamilton resulted in a monthly saving of 800 gallons of petrol. He considered the saving would be much greater when operators settled down to the new conditions. “In all cases reviewed operators generally have assisted and endeavoured to carry out my wishes, for which I am very grateful,” Mr Phelan added.
