CIVILIANS KILLED
NAZIS’ DELIBERATE ATTACK CONSPICUOUS BUILDINGS HIT (Omclal Wireless) (Received Sept. 14, 11.0 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 13 An air raid warning sounded for the third time today in mid-after-noon, but lasted only a few minutes. A Ministry of Home Security Communique after the second raid, which was the subject of four hours’ warning, says: Following last night’s ineffective attacks, in which bombs were dropped on London at random through heavy clouds, a small number of enemy aircraft today deliberately bombed a number of conspicuous buildings in various parts of London irrespective of their nature.
It is feared that the enemy succeeded in killing or injuring a number of civilians.
MOTHERS RELUCTANT
EVACUATION OF CHILDREN PROBLEMS IN LONDON (United Press Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 12 In spite of nearly a week of intensive bombing, London’s workingclass mothers are still reluctant to co-operate in the Government’s and local authorities’ evacuation scheme, says the Daily Telegraph. “We expected that a very large jump in the registrations would follow the mass air raids,” said an official, “but frankly we are disappointed. It is true that registration has risen from a few hundred a week to 1000 a day, but the figure is far less than we anticipated, because the scheme was ready for the evacuation of 250,000 within a few days.” Serious problems are arising from the use of public air-raid shelters in out-lying districts of London as nightly dormitories by people living in the severely-bombed eastern areas.
Thousands from the East End and also from the inner eastern suburbs flock every evening into London’s “green belt,” taking blankets, mattresses and food, and fill the shelters when the sirens sound. They sleep as best they can and then go home in the morning. Many of these shelters were intended/primarily for pedestians who might be caught in the street, and not for all-night use. Similar problems have arisen in the West End. Ai* raid wardens say persons tour the shelters in the day time and select the most comfortable.
