TOPICS OF THE DAY

“ Utilitarian Pacifist ” Since the outbreak of the war Professor C. E. M. Joad, the philosopher, has advocated, on the platform and in print, peace by negotiation, notes a London correspondent. He records a change of mind in a letter in the News Chronicle. London. “ Peace by negotiation is out of the question now,” he writes; “ things have reached a pass at which only a British victory in the field will overthrow ‘ the horrible rule of gangsters and thugs’.” Professor Joad has described himself as “ a utilitarian pacifist.” He is still that: he believes that much less good than evil comes of war, that the war should never have been begun, that we may lose, in winning the war. what we are fighting for. But in losing the war. he said, we should be certain to lose those liberties, and he would rather face the possibility than the certainty. The possibility can be watched for and fought against. To further his views he has offered his services to the Ministry of Information.
