INCREASE IN WAGES
COST TO COUNTY COUNCIL RESULT OF APPEAL AWAITED The 5 per cent, increase in wages was discussed by the Raglan "County Council at Ngaruawahia yesterday. “It is only fair,” stated the chairman, Mr Wilson, “that all employees should get the increase and not those employees only who are under a special award.” Some compensation would have to be made, especially to the lower-paid workers whose weekly income had been seriously diminished by the new National Security Tax. The county clerk, Mr G. BrownleeSmith, said the extra amount to be paid in wages to the council’s employees, who were under a special award, would be in the vicinity of £250 and if the non-union members of the staff were included, the figure would considerably exceed £3OO. Mr R. J. Glasgow considered the council should await the result of appeals which were being made against the increase in wages before any definite opinion was expressed. The farming community must inevitably be opposed to the increase u they were to be forced to carry the further burden, said Mr R. Johnstone. The farmers should be compensated in some way such as by a rise in tno guaranteed price.
