Their problem* is further complicated when they have a son who grows up to hate his father because of his continued absence. Jackie Cooper’s human drama, j “Streets of New York,” is a story of a youngster who tries to follow j in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln. Jackie runs a newspaper stand and attends law school at night. “THE STAR-MAKER” “The Star-maker,” with Bing Crosby heading the cast, and “ Code ; of the Secret Service,” a sensationa. drama,, will be screened tomorrow. STATE THEATRE “Crime School” shows how easily youths may be led into a life of crime |if not given the right kind of environment and an opportunity *o I “make good” in life. The popular ! Dead End Kids are seen to particular j advantage in this appealing story, j and once again prove how clever j they are despite their youth. Humphrey Bogart and Gale Page , give good support. In “The Californian” action, romance and humour are combined in entertaining fashion as the story works up to its thrilling climax. Cortez, and Marjorie Weaver head the cast. “DOUBLE ALIBI” Two thrilling films. “Double Alibi” and “Curtain Call,” will be screened tomorrow. CIVIC THEATRE “Alice Blue Gown” (with Anna Neagle dancing and looking very lovely in the coloured scenes), “Irene” and “Castle of Dreams,” are song hits introduced into “Irene.” The British star is cast as an Irish shop girl who becomes a dress model, and then almost overnight emerges as the toast of New York society because of the gorgeous gowns she wears in public as a publicity stunt for her firm. Her wealthy employer (Ray Milland) falls in love with her and the story develops on entertaining and romantic lines. “TURNABOUT” “Turnabout,” Thorne Smith’s very funny comedy, will head the new programme tomorrow. It is said to be as amusing and unusual as the same author’s “Topper” series.
