BIBLE INDICATION

NATIONAL REGISTER TAKEN CHRISTIANITY AND WAR (By Telegrapn.—special to Times) HASTINGS, Tuesday Scriptural Justification for conscription for military service was quoted by the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, at a luncheon of the Napier Rotary Club. He referred to the opening verses of the first chapter of Numbers, in which are recorded the Divine commands for making a national register of the children of Israel, every male 20 years old and upv/ard, able to go to war, being grouped in tribal armies. “I certainly am not one who feels that to fight in this war is against Christianity,” said Bishop Bennett. “The work of Christianity is one permanent thing that bombs cannot destroy, and it is this which will regenerate the British Empire. When the Christian Missionary Society started at the beginning of last century all Europe was at war with England. “I firmly believe, notwithstanding that Britain again today has practically all the Old World against her, she will come out on top. We must take drink, gambling and pleasures that are not constructive, and put them in a cauldron and boil them up. Then we must remove the dross and allow to remain what is worth while.”
