AUSTRALIAN COALMINERS DISPUTE OVER HOURS I 14,000 MEN AFFECTED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 28, 3.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 28 The coalmining industry is threatened with another strike as a result of a dispute about the hours which engine-drivers should work during the week-end. About 850 engine-drivers are affected, but if they cease work about 14,000 miners will be thrown idle. The organiser of the Federated Engine-drivers’ and Firemen’s Association, Mr H. Sutherland, has sent a circular to the sub-branch secretaries and delegates telling them to instruct engine-drivers and firemen that unless their employers give a written assurance that they will recognise six hours as a full working ! shift on Saturdays and Sundays no j member is to present himself for j work at the week-end. The men at present work six-hour shifts at the week-end and are paid for eight hours’ work.
