SUBSTANTIAL DROP

-■ SHEEP VALUES FALL ) r E ; DULL FRANKTON MARKET > BEEF SLIGHTLY EASIER ! Sheep values at Frankton slumped r yesterday, when an extra heavy ; yarding proved considerably in ext cess of buyers’ requirements. Ewes ; were cheaper by as much as 7s to 10s J a head, while wethers were usually i 3s to 6s a head lower. A heavy eni try of fat cattle showed a slight easE ing, while an average penning of fat pigs also made less money. The ox pens were filled, entries consisting mainly of fair quality > heavy and medium-weight cattle. l From £l4 7s 6d to £ls 10s was given 1 for heavy prime descriptions, from ■ £l2 7s 6d to £l3 14s for meaty medl ium-weight sorts, and from £lO 10s i to £ll 15s for lighter cattle. There ■ was no distinct drop in values, but ' on the whole the market showed a • weakening tendency. The price per -1001 b. remained substantially the ■ same. Values were also back just a shade -in the cow and heifer beef section. ■ The quality of the yarding was generally up to standard with a fair proportion of extra heavy choice entries. ■ These were traded from £lO 5s to ■ £ll 17s, with heavy prime cattle [ changing hands from £9 to £lO 2s ' 6d, prime from £7 to £8 10s, and fat i from £5 10s to £6 7s 6d. As with the ox beef, there were occasional instances of entries making firm money. Little change was shown in the calf market, while a heavy yarding of boner cattle was quoted unchanged. Buyers Not Keen Although values over the early sales did not show any substantial drop, the sheep market went from bad to worse as the sale progressed, and entries sold in the final rows made considerably lower rates. Some of the most attractive quality sheep for some weeks were penned, but this fact was offset by the abnormal size of the yarding and the number of inferior quality entries. There was some variation in sales, but a drop of from 3s to 6s a head for wethers, and from 7s to 10s for ewes was usual. Comparatively few pens of wethers sold above 395, good average sorts usually being traded from 33s to 375. Only one pen made the top money of 42s 6d. ; Top quality ewes were difficult to 1 sell even from 25s 6d to 27s 6d, against 33s 6d to 35s 6d last week. ■ Buyers showed no enthusiasm and several, who are usually very active, did practically no buying. Although the yarding was no big- • ger than last week and the buying • bench was just as representative, fat l pig values showed a drop of at least : 2s a head. Store pigs were again r eagerly sought, and late Frankton ! rates were repeated. » Price Summary ' The following table is a summary , of prices realised for fat stock at the Frankton yards at the last two sales:
