Harvest of Sea

Recently a ship arrived at New Plymouth with a cargo of newsprint. This was packed in crates with two-by-two scantling. If the timber had been landed at the New Plymouth wharf duty would have had to be paid on it. and as the timber had little commercial value the newsprint was taken out of the crates on the ship. When the ship was clear of the port the timber was dumped overboard, with the result that certain Fitzroy residents are reaping a harvest. On the foreshore between the Te Henui and Waiwakaiho Rivers men, women and schoolboys on holiday are busy from daylight to dark collecting the timber that is being washed ashore.
