OBITUARY

MR ROBERT WAITE WAIKATO PIONEER (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Thursday The death occurred at his residence, Victoria Road, Cambridge, yesterday, of Mr Robert Waite, a well-known Waikato pioneer, aged 81. The late Mr Waite was bom in Lurgon, Northern Ireland, and came to New Zealand in the old sailing vessel Waikato about 63 years ago. Arriving at Auckland, he set out for the Waikato, where he had lived ever since. As a young man he took up contract wdrk, and spent the greater part of his younger days in camp life. In 1882, he married Miss Mary Alexander, of Horotiu, and then took up residence in Hamilton for about 20 years. He took up a block of unbroken country at Te Rapa, part of which is St. Andrew’s golf links today. After spending seven years developing this farm, he sold it and came to Cambridge, where he took up his well-known “Springfield” property at Pukekura. About 16 years ago Mr and Mrs Waite came to live in Cambridge. In 1932 they celebrated their golden wedding. Mr Waite was a member of the old Pukekura Road Board, and a staunch member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife and family of seven sons and three daughters. They are Messrs T. Waite (Hamilton), W. Waite (Hamilton), G. Waite (Cambridge), R. Waite (Cambridge), A. Waite (Hamilton), Len. Waite (Tauranga), Les. Waite (Cambridge), Nurse A. Waite (Cambridge), Mrs C. R. Bycroft (Cambridge) and Mrs H. Trewin (Whangarei). There are 20 grandchildren.

DEATH AT 102 DEFENDER OF STOCKADE (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Friday The sole remaining member of the Pukekohe East Church garrison, which was attacked by Maoris in 1363, Captain Joseph Corbett Scott died yesterday at the age of 102 at his home, Manukau Road, Epsom. It was 66 years on Wednesday since his marriage to Miss lieien Corbett, third daughter of Dr. Corbett, a pioneer of the Tuakau district, who is aged 87, and he was looking forward to a wedding anniversary until he fell seriously ill some days ago.
