Pigeon Races
Dr. R. G. Simmers, of the Meteorological Office, addressing the Wellington Rotary Club, said that inquiries were often made by pigeon fanciers a day or two before the Saturday on which races were held between Hamilton and Wellington. He was at a loss to know why the owners of the pigeons wanted to know about the weather so long ahead, till one owner revealed that, if the wind were going to be northerly he sent his light birds, and, if southerly, his heavy ones. The extra time was needed because they had to send their pigeons from Wellington by train on the preceding Thursday.
