THE ITALIAN FORCES

SUCCESS OF BRITISH WAR IN SOMALILAND

(United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 14 “ British troops in Somaliland have thrown back the Italians in the first clash between the main forces,” reports the Berbera correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. “Fierce bombing and machine-gunning of the positions at Jugarga Pass and of reserves to the rear preceded the main Italian attack which was launched at noon. “ The Italian forces comprised mainly Blackshirts, who went into action at first in large numbers. The battle raged throughout the day and reached its maximum intensity toward evening, although its continued until dark. “ Our troops stoutly defended their positions against superior numbers and repulsed the Italians at all points. “ One Italian column, finding a gap between two positions, broke through but was repulsed after bitter fighting. The Italians suffered heavy casualties. “ Our infantry fire brought down one bomber. “ Fighting for the advanced positions continues. The Italians have taken a week to reach the main British positions, although only small detachments of the Camel Corps barred their way. “ The whole campaign has developed along lines which were foreseen by iiie Somaliland High Command two years ago. The attacks have been made at the points expected, and the preparation of the positions which the British are now defending actually began in July of last year.” Italian forces advancing along the coast from Zeila to Berbera were dispersed yesterday by light British naval forces. The Italians are at present held up. According to the British broadcasting Corporation, the position of the British forces in Somaliland is regarded as serious but not critical.
