NEW ZEALAND POTATOES

STRONG PROTEST MADE DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT ORANGES FOR POTATOES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrltrlu . (Received August 7, 3.15 p.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 7 A protest against the continued importation of New Zealand potatoes into Australia while Tasmanian supplies are sufficient to meet the market demand was made in the House of Representatives by Mr Spurrab, of Tasmania. He said he had been informed in correspondence from the Ministei that one of the reasons for the lifting of the embargo against New Zealand potatoes was because of the economic conditions in New Zealand while both Dominions were at war.

Mr Pollard asked if a permit was given to obtain the entry of New South Wales oranges to New Zealand or to improve New Zealand's trade balance.

The Minister replied that the Government had permitted the importation of 5000 tons of New Zealand potatoes because a shortage was expected. There were no other motives.
