COLTS IN LEAD

HOOPER CUP HOCKEY KAIPAKI NARROWLY BEATEN OLD BOYS AND AOTEA DRAW With backs and forwards playing right up to form, Colts gained a highly deserving win over Kaipaki by two goals to one when senior hockey in the Hooper Cup competition was resumed at Steele Park on Saturday. The Colts team now takes the lead in the competition, a role in contrast to the one the team took in the Killip Memorial Shield competition, in which it occupied the last position on the ladder. However, the team has shown marked improvement lately and has an excellent chance of annexing the Hooper Cup if it can reproduce the same standard of play in future matches. Old Boys held Aotea to a draw, one all, after a hard encounter, which was always full of interest. The competition table now reads as follows: P. W. L. D. F. A.Pts. Colts 3 2 1 0 5 8 4 Old Boys ..3111653 Aotea 3 1116 4 3 Kaipaki ... 3 1 2 0 5 5 2 VICTORY DESERVED COLTS BEAT KAIPAKI Although at no times brilliant, play in the game between Colts and Kaipaki was very open and evenly contested. Perrett notched a good goal and gave his team an early lead, Colts’ position being further strengthened when Bogue later beat the country team’s goalie with a hard shot. In the final stages Kaipaki tried hard to avert defeat but without success. However, Graham bettered the country team’s position by a goal just before the end. The teams were: —Colts: McKinnon, Tozer, Ennion, Jane, Harvey, Carbon, Campbell, Curteis, Bogue, Perrett, Tozer. Kaipaki: Goodwin, F. Boyd, A. Boyd, McDonald, Farrell, T. McCarthy, M. Boyd, B. Gauly, L. Dunwoody, T. Ganly. Messrs Grade and Weedon were the umpires. DRAWN MATCH AOTEA AND OLD BOYS Play was fast and open throughout the game between Old Boys and Aotea. The former led at halftime, but shortly after the interval the Technical team set up a persistent attack and eventually succeeded in drawing level. Both teams then made determined efforts to force a decision, but the game ended in a draw. The teams were:—Old Boys: Wattam, Broadbent, Pountney, Olive, Ross, Ojala, Chard, Vercoe, Ewan, Wright, . Sutherland. Aotea: Puch, Bowler, Clark, Hinton, Jenkins, V. Sage, Fountain, Hoff. Powdrill, W. Sage, Lipsey. Hoff brought the ball into the circle, but an infringement spoilt a promising movement. Aotea’s forwards continued to bring the ball to the circle, but Wright and Sutherland combined in a fast movement down the right flank and took play in turn to Aotea’s circle. Chard came into the picture when he received a centring shot from Sutherland. He brought the ball into a scoring position but Clark blocked well and sent the ball downfield. Offensive Resumed Aotea resumed the offensive for a spell but could do nothing effective in the circle. Old Boys turned defence into attack and eventually forced a corner. Ewan made a determined effort to goal, but Puch blocked his shot well. Wright followed the ball into the goal-mouth, but an infringement gave Aotea the opportunity to clear. Fountain later broke through for Aotea and brought play to the circle, but Pountney- ran back and smartly sent the ball out. A vigorous attack brought Old Boys in front of Aotea’s goal where another corner was awarded. This time Ewan was more successful, sending in a hard shot that gave Puch little chance. Old Boys 1. Aotea 0. Aotea began to force the pace after the interval but could make little impression on Old Boys’ solid defence. Wattam cleared nicely on two occasions and later Sutherland nullified Aotea’s efforts with a dash down the side-line. The Technical team persisted in its attacks, however, and eventually drew level when Powdrill poked the ball into the net from a melee in the circle. Aotea 1, Old Boys 1. Old Boys Attacks Old Boys swung into attack when a long clearing shot from Pountney’s stick was followed up by Sutherland and then by Wright. Jenkins relieved a dangerous position for Aotea with a smart clearing shot downfield. The Technical forwards made a strong bid to reach the other circle, but Ross tackled well and stopped the onrush. Sage later took the ball right to Old Boys’ goal-mouth, but the goalie came out and hindered his attempt to goal. In another attempt by Aotea to go ahead, Sage sent the ball across to Lipsey on the rightThe winger centred, and Powdrill attempted to goal but his effort went just wide. The score was still one all when the final whistle sounded. Messrs D. Hunter and W. G. Fabling were the umpires. JUNIOR RESULTS Junior results on Saturday were as follows:—Tokomaru 4, Arawa 3; Technical A 11. Technical R 1; Old Boys B 8, Old Boys A 0.
