BUOYANT TONE

MARKET AT FRANKTON BULLOCKS SELL TO £ls 5s Od LATE RATES FOR SHEEP Unusual buoyancy for this time of the year characterised the fat stock market at the Frankton sale yesterday. Individual prices in the fat cattle sections were the highest for some months although there was no actual rise in values as a whole. In some cases beef values tended just a shade lower. Late rates were repeated for fat sheep, while entries in a short Denning of pigs were again dear. Some attractive quality pens were forward in the ox section. Some extra heavy prime descriptions were traded from £l3 16s to £ls ss, the latter figure being 15s better than the highest quotation of last week and best money realised in this section for some months. Actually, only a few entries sold above £l3 16s and prices above this figure were realised in single instances. The top price was paid for an extra heavy Hereford bullock. Other heavy sorts yesterday made from £l2 9s to £l3 5s and medium descriptions from £lO 15s to £ll 17s 6cl. The top price of £ll 5s for cows and heifers was 5s better than last week’s top money. Extra heavy prime sorts were quoted from £9 5s to £ll 5s and heavy prime from £8 to £9 Is. As with ox, values on the whole were very firm on last week’s advanced values, but there were instances where realisations were hardly as good. The good quality of many of the pens helped competition, while further assistance was given by the presence of several outside buyers. Values were keen in the calf action, one buyer paying £3 Is for a heavy choice runner, this being the highest figure realised in this section for some considerable time. Boner cattle were also firmly sought.

Firm Sheep Market < Although the usual number of , plain quality sheep was not absent, ' there were quite a number of attrac- ! •Live lines in the fat sheep section. Values were fully firm, but top prices were more consistently realised than was the case last week. For instance, the top figure of 36s for wethers was obtained for several lines, but top money at previous sales has usually been confined to one line. Extra choice wethers were quoted from 33s 6d to 335, compared with 33s 6d to 37s last week, and fat sorts from 30s to 325, the same money as last week. Ewes were sometimes a little firmer, choice sorts being quoted from 23s to 27s in comparison with 22s to 25s 6d last week, and fat descriptions from 19s Gd to 225, against 18s to 20s 6d. Lambs showed little change. Fat pig entries were again short, with the result that there was no falling away in values. Baconers were quoted from 70s to 93s and porkers from 46s to 68s. Store pigs, however, were not so keenly sought, and values depreciated slightly.
