WARFARE AT SEA
BRITISH SHIPPING LOSSES INCREASE DURING WEEK (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received July 17, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 11 The Admiralty reports that British mercantile losses for the week ended July 8 were considerably greater than in the previous week, as a result of more violent and more frequent aerial and submarine attacks. Twenty-two British, Allied and neutral ships were lost, totalling 114,137 tons, of which Britain lost 13 ships. Our losses were a little over half the record for the war, which was established during the week ended June 23, when we lost over 200,000 tons. The British Navy since the outbreak of the war has escorted 100,000,000 gross tons of shipping, of which only 47 British and neutral ships have been lost. Germany and Italy have lost respectively 887,000 and 244,000 tons of merchant shipping to July 15.
