BURGLAR GUILTY
CASH AND TILL FROM SHOP REMANDED FOR SENTENCE After having been found guilty by the jury of breaking, entering and theft, George Frederick Murphy, aged 44, labourer, of Mokauiti, was remanded by Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court, Hamilton, yesterday, to appear later in the session for sentence. The accused had been charged with breaking and entering a store at Mokauiti and stealing £lB in cash and a till valued at 355. the crime being committed after a Returned Soldiers’ Association reunion in April last. Mr A. G. Ward, for the defence, did not call evidence. He submitted that the evidence of the Crown was circumstantial and there must be an ; element of doubt regarding the ! offence. He claimed the evidence of the button meant nothing, while cut I hands and blood were far too comI mon to be of value as evidence. Furthermore, a man of the size ol j the accused could not have gained access to the shop through so small ‘ a window. The jury was in retirement for nearly two hours.
