TROUT HATCHERIES
GRATIFYING RESULTS j MANY MORE OVA STRIPPED (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) ROTORUA, Tuesday Complete satisfaction with the reconstructed trout hatchery at Tokaanu and. with the progress ot stripping in both the Taupo and the Rotorua districts was expressed by Mr A. Kean, conservator of fish and game, after an inspection. Not only are there far more ova in the hatcheries at Ngongotaha and Tokaanu than at this time last year, but the fish are in better condition and | averaging a greater weight. The hatchery at Tokaanu is now ■ as modern as that at the State Game : Farm at Ngongotaha and built on : the same plan. At Ngongotaha there j are G 6 hatching tanks, and at l Tokaanu 68. The stripping of ova has been in | progress since early in June, ana ; already 500,000 have hatched at Ngongotaha. At both the Rotorua and j Taupo hatcheries the number of ova ; is almost double what it was at this time last year—*2.9l3.ooo are held ai Rotorua and 1,350,000 at Taupo. | TL re were only 1.500.000 ova at ; Rotorua at this time in 1930. Com--1 pared with more than 3,000,000 ova j stripped at Tokaanu this year, there ! were only 1,600,000 by the middle j of last July. j The first overseas shipment of ova j for the year was made to Fiji this i week, when 100,000 ova were sent. ! This was the first consignment to be sent from New Zealand to Fiji. From North Canterbury the NgoI ngotaha hatchery will receive 500.000 brown trout ova tomorrow in exchange for rainbow trout ova. With | stripping so successful, the consign--1 ments of ova to the hatchery at Wai- ! karemoana will he made earlier this j year, some 100,00'J going there this 4 week.
