EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS
SURVEY OF PREPARATIONS A check on the plans made by local authorities throughout New Zealand in response to the Government’s plea to prepare emergency precautions to meet earthquake, fire, flood, and enemy-action disasters, is being made by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry. In a communication received today by the Waikato County Council, the Minister inquired what steps had been taken by the council to prepare for any emergencies. Councillors stated that preparations were being carried out in the district by other organisations, but no definite steps had been taken yet by the county council. It would be possible, however, to organise within a few days, with each councillor taking responsibility for organisation in his own district. A request was received by the Huntly Emergency Precautions Committee for a grant of £5 from the council so that the organisation could be carried on. It was decided to refuse the application, the council being of the opinion that money for the work was the responsibility of the Government.
