CHARGES OF FAKING BOXING SENSATIONS GALENTO AND SCHMELING (United Press A-sn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received July 9, 3.15 p.m.) CHICAGO, July 8 The Illinois State Athletic Commission has decided that Harry Thomas’ charges that his bouts with Max Schmeling and Tony Galento were “fixed” have not been sustained. Thomas was knocked out by Galento in the third round at Philadelphia on November 16. 1938, and was defeated by Schmeling on a technical knock-out in the eighth round at New York on December 13, 1937. In October. 1939, Thomas alleged that by arrangements with the boxing managers, Joe Jacobs and Nat Lewis, his fights were faked in order to build up the reputations of challengers seeking bouts with Joe Louis. Thomas said that he received 8500 dollars for taking a “dive” against Schmeling and was promised 6000 dollars for similar tactics in his bout with Galento. When the Chicago Tribune published alleged affidavits by Thomas containing these allegations the Illinois State Athletic Commission barred Tony Galento. Max Schmeling. Harry Thomas, Joe Jacobs and Nat Lewis from staging further fights pending an inquiry. _____
