Copyright) (Received July 9, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 8 It is authoritatively stated that since the outbreak of the war only two British fighters have been lost in defending Britain, compared with 112 German attacking planes lost, plus 25 others unlikely to have reached their base. It is officially stated that Royal Air Force fighters shot down three enemy bombers today. Two Messerschmitts are believed to have been shot down after a thrilling battle over the south-east of England this afternoon. Hundreds of people watched the dogfight. The enemy attacked two west coast towns, causing several casualties. They also bombed an east coast town, where there was little damage and no casualties. It is authoritatively stated that a Spitfire pilot shot down two Messerschmitts over the Channel last night and attacked three others before reaching the base unscathed. Alexandria and Malta Raided Italian planes again raided Alexandria this morning. Heavy anti-air-craft fire prevented them dropping, bombs. Five enemy planes were shot down in heavy raids on Malta between 3 p.m. yesterday and 10 a.m. today.
