July 8 The British, pounding 1000 beleaguered Italians, drove them from Capuzzo to the surrounding trenches. Armed water convoys escorted by tanks, repeatedly but vainly tried to force their way through our encircling lines, but suffered heavy casualties which is demoralising the defenders of Capuzzo. The British destroyed fifty lorries, in five days. Two Italian fighters .attempted to machine-gun the attackers, but British lighters shot them down. The British arc now dominating approximately 3500 square miles of the Libyan desert, and are harassing the Italians so much that they are no longer willing to come out in the open.
