THEFTS OF CLOTHING LABOURER SENT TO PRISON (Special to Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Monday. Before Messrs L. G. Armstrong* and W. Swains, justices of the peace, at To Awamutu on Saturday, Joseph Vance Vtscoe, labourer with no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to the theft of a shin from Fowler's Bargain Store, Tc Awamutu, a clock from Bright & Co., Jewellers, Te Awanmtu, and a pair of pyjamas from T. C. Thomas, mercer, Ohakune. Accused, who admitted a long- list of prior .conviction?/', was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment on the charge of stealing the shirt, and was convicted and discharged on the other charges. MILITARY RESERVE COMPANY FORMED j At a meeting of returned soldiers held at To Awamutu to consider the formation or a unit of the National Military Reserve, there was a good attendance, including many country representatives. Mr C. O. Edmonds, president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, who presided, Introduced Captain McWhannell, who briefly outlined the necessary steps. Reference was made to the fact that if it. were decided to Torm a unit, there would be nothing by way nr official recognition nor any arrangement for equipment or uniforming the men. ' Captain McWhannell explained that the Army Department would provide instruc- , lion as desired and machine-guns and prnnll arms would be available for these j purposes though not Tor general uses. He said that the unit would serve a very j useful purpose as a body and individual members could assist in many ways by providing guards and Instructors for the l territorial' army which had been mobilised. I There was plenty to do. he said, and he strongly urged the formation of the unit In Te Awamutu. ' It was pointed out that a unit had been formed known as the Waikato Mobile Unit which was operating with the idea of providing scone for the country members. There would be no clashing and that unit could co-operate with the National Military Reserve. It was decided to form a comnany. and the Returned Soldiers’ Association executive -was appointed to select the commandoes and other officers and comn'le n schedule or duties so that before en'-ol-monts were asked for. tlie men would he able to Judge whether th«y rnnVi devote the time to the work artcr fulfilling thenordinary work Light Horse Association Forty riders assembled at Mr S. C. B. Mnckv’s farm on Saturday afternoon when the To Awamutu Light Association held a run. There was a large number of Interested spectators and at the close afternoon tea was served at Mr Macltv’s Homestead.
