THREAT OF FAMINE
CONDITIONS IN EUROPE RUMANIA’S GREAT LOSS EFFECT OF SOVIET SEIZURE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received July 8, 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 7 Still further accentuating the threat of famine in Europe, the Soviet’s appropriation of territories in Bessarabia and Bukovina means the loss to Rumania of some of the most fertile districts in the Western Hemisphere. It is believed that about 7,000,000 acres of cultivable land has changed hands, representing over twenty per cent of Rumania’s agricultural area. The appropriated territories are mainly concerned with the production of maize, with wheat, barley, rye and oats next in importance. Rumania also loses practically all its soya bean, rape seed, and castor seed production areas, on which incidentally Germany has previously drawn heavily.
