FRENCH PROTEST
AMBASSADOR RESIGNS (.United Press Assn.—laec. Tel. Copyright) (Received July 6, 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 5 The French Charge d’Affaires, M. Roger Cambun, has protested to the Foreign Office, on behalf of the Petain Government, against the British Fleet's action against the French Fleet in the Mediterranean. M. Cambun called on Viscount Halifax and informed him that ne had placed his resignation in the hands of the French Government. The Marquis of Castellene has assumed charge of the French Embassy. GENEVA, July 5 Marshal Petain, Admiral Darean and M. Baudouin have sent this message to Mr Winston Churchill, Mr Alexander, and the British Admiralty:— “The French Admiralty notes with painful feeling that the misfortunes of France left unmoved the English rulers, who, thinking only of becoming masters of the French Fleet, which must remain French or perish. “The French Navy in any case does not deserve to be stabbed on the order of Mr Churchill, who last winter implored the French Admiralty for the loan of its principal vessels to protect Canadian ships because the British Admiralty no longer had the necessary means of doing so.” BERLIN, July 4 A radio declared that General de Gaulle has been informed he must appear at a court martial in France for trial.
