HARRIER RACING

WAIKATO ACTIVITIES NOTES AND COMMENTS j i ~~ (By “ Cross Country ”) Fine weather again favoured the I club last Saturday when a s^-mile j run was staged from Mr R. B. Joyes’ j residence in Thackeray Street. With i probably the most important races 1 of the year to be held this month, the ! outing provided excellent training [ as well as a line on the form of the j majority of the runners. | Some 20 runners, split into three packs, slow, medium and fast, covered the course, which provided iome of the most trying hill-work so far encountered this season. The most outstanding performance being that of L. Irwin, who competed the journey in approximately 34 minutes, indicating that he is at the very peak of form, and should prove most troublesome at the forthcoming championship meeting. Comment on Form K. Chitty, who finished first in the Gilchrist Rose Bowl earlier this season in brilliant time, has not been running so well lately, probably due a recent attack of ’flu. C. Hill, while running fairly consistently of late, would show marked improvement if he attended the weekly training runs a little more regularly. Ji. Richardson: This promising jun-

ior was a noticeable absentee last week, suffering from a severe cold, which was rather unfortunate, with the junior championships only a fortnight awav. and it is to be hoped he is fit ancl well before then. M. Cranston: Another junior performer, followed up his fine effort last week against Calliope to finish close behind L. Irwin. Morrie has been training very hard this season and has shown a marked improvement on last, year’s form. All going well he should provide one or two surprises in the near future. I. Adams is showing much better form now as the result of regular outings each week under the care of Mr R. Johnson. C. Martyn: This runner is improving slowly but requires to run with more determination. A couple of weeks’ solid road-work would probably give him the necessary stamina to stay with the leaders. N. Saunders is not training as much as his team mates but nevertheless is full of promise and should be well up in the junior championships. D. Miller has shown great promise this year and his form just now indicates that he should gain higher honours in the near future. C. Rotherain was another who ran exceedingly well, and has only to maintain his present form in order to make a place for himself in the front ranks of harrier racing. Junior Team From the form displayed recently it is almost certain that the junior team to represent the club at the Auckland Provincial Cross Country Championships will probably be selected from the following: M. Cranston, R. Richardson, I. Adams, C. Martyn, L. Saunders, F. Smith, R. McLachlan, W. McLachlan. However a lot will depend on the attendance at training during the next two weeks, as this is the most critical stage of the proceedings. After the run the members were entertained by Mrs Joyes at a most enjoyable afternoon tea. During this interval the opportunity was taken to present Club Captain A. D. Crabb with a suitably inscribed pocket compass, in view of the fact that he was going into camp for five months with the Territorials.
