OBITUARY
MR W. H. GUTHRIE - SMITH (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) NAPIER, Thursday The death occurred this afternoon of Mr William Herbert GuthrieSmith, aged 79, of Tutira, Hawke’s Bay. He was well known, throughout New Zealand as an author, naturalist and sheep-breeder. Mr Guthrie-Smith, who was bom at Helmsburgh, Scotland, in 1861, arrived in New Zealand in 1880. In 1882 he began, as he once put it, to “dig himself in” at Tutira. His books covered many aspects of New Zealand life. Like his father, Mr John Guthrie-Smith, he was an ardent lover of nature, to which his “Birds of the Water, Wood and Waste,” “Muttonbirds and Other Birds” and “Tutira” bore witness. With various tsnures, the Tutira Station took in more than 20,000 acres originally, and the peak season shearing showed a tally of 41,000 sheep and lambs. When the run was subdivided, an area of nearly 7000 acres was retained in the Tutira homestead block. Mr Guthrie-Smith was a fellow of the New Zealand Institute, now known as the Royal Society of New Zealand, in 1924. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs J. A. Absolom, of Rissington, Hawke’s Bay, his wife having died some years ago. MR HUGH ADAM (By TelegrapTi—'pedal to Times) .. He was chairman of directors of the Dominion Rubber Company and a director of the New Zealand Express Company. His wife died 22 years ago.
