ITALIAN FORCE IN AFRICA ROYAL AIR FORCE ACTIVE DIRECT HITS ON BOMBERS (Ofnclal Wireless) (Received July 5, 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, July 4 It is authoritatively stated that British troops successfully engaged Italians at Moyale. The Italians, who were considerably superior in numbers to the British, crossed the frontier some distance from Moyale and worked round to attack the British post from the rear. The British commander sent immediately for reinforcements, which arrived and attacked the Italians, who were driven out of our territory. A Royal Air Force communique from Cairo states: Co-operating with South African Army bombers, the Royal Air Force attacked heavy gun-positions near Bandar, a camp in the Moyale district. Bombs scored direct hits on gun positions. A big explosion occurred nearby, probably due to the blowing up of an ammunition dump. The airmen machine - gunned troops who were taking cover in a ravine and woods. All our planes returned. Bomb on King’s Estate A British Army communique states: The enemy advanced against Solium on July 3, and subsequently withdrew. On the Kenya front the enemy, with the support of artillery and aircraft, thrice unsuccessfully attacked Moyale. Our casualties were slight. A naval communique states: Enemy planes raided Alexandria and dropped 32 bombs. Only slight damage was done. Three people were killed and four injured. A bomb fell on King Farouk’s estate. Claims by Italy The Italian High Command reports that Italians from Libya pushed across the Egyptian frontier near Solium. Native dubats from Ethiopia occupied a British fort at Mojale, on the Kenya border. Repeated English attacks on the Capuzzo redoubt were repulsed. One Italian submarine has not returned. On the Sudan frontier Italian bombed fortresses at Akopo and Galabat. An enemy air raid on Assab caused slight damage.
