AUCKLAND SALES REPORTED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Friday Sales were reported as follows at the morning call on the Stock Exchange: Dominion Breweries (0rd.),.28s 3d. Inscribed stock, 15/1/53-57, £100; 15/4/48-49, £lO2 15s. Noon Call Northern Roller Mills, 18s 3d. Milne and Choyce (deb stock), 14s 6d. Inscribed stock, £ls/4/46-49, £lO3. 6d To See Appendix For novel ways of helping the Patriotic Fund the palm for inventiveness must surely be awarded to a Wellington resident who, when taken to hospital for an appendicitis operation, hit on the novel idea of charging visitors who came to see him sixpence to see his appendix reposing in a bottle, the money to go to help the war effort. The sum raised is not known, but as many of his fellow-workers in the Public Works Department went to see him, it is understood that it was quite a tidy amount. The doctor who performed the operation was heard to say when he learned of the scheme that it was the first time he had ever heard of an appendix being commercialised.

Offer of Hermitage The offer of the Hermitage, Mount Cook, two hotels at Queenstown and its transport and staff for use for war purposes has been made to the Government by the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Company, Limited. The offer is being considered by the Government. “We could transport and accommodate and arrange for back country accommodation for a large numbe _Df women and children in the case of an emergency, and their having to be evacuated from the coast,” the company's letter stated. “The hotels could be used as hostels and convalescent homes for those returning from overseas, but not seriously wounded.” Another suggestion made by the company was that if a general evacuation from England were made, it could accommodate a large number of people.
