MARRIED PAY
SERVICE IN FORCES MEN DEEMED SINGLE REGISTER NEARLY COMPLETE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Men who have married since May 1 will be classified as single men for the purpose of the ballot calling them up for service within the Dominion or overseas, but will, be paid as married men, according to a statement made by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, in an interview today. Reports that the men would be treated as single men under army pay conditions were denied by the Minister. “They will receive the usual pay and allowances of maried men,” he said. “It would be unfair to treat them otherwise.” Compilation of the first part of the national service register from 900,000 forms that have been filled in by adults in New Zealand and deliver- , ed to the National Service Department by the Post Office is nearly finished. The register is the basis on which the ballot for conscription can be conducted. Several hundred men and women have been working day and night at the task for about six weeks, and by about the middle of next week it will be finished, except for rounding up stragglers. The majority of people left enrolment until the last moment, and then the department received a deluge of forms.
