£25,000 FOR PLANES

PROJECT IN SOUTHLAND PRESENT FOR BRITAIN * (By Telegraph.—Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Thursday A public movement for the purchase of fighter aeroplanes by Southland for presentation to Britain culminated in the setting up of a representative committee which asked the Government lor permission to raise and remit purchase money overseas. The objective is £25,000, of which £SOO has already been donated by Mr G. A. Hamilton. Lumsden. The committee is co-operating with the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association, which is sending two representatives to Wellington for discussion at headquarters. The public wishes the presenta-tion-planes to be manned by Southland pilots. The Government’s permission for the appeal is awaited. SHIP FREE PRODUCE COMMERCE CHAMBER’S SCHEME STERLING GIFT ALTERNATIVE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Thursday A proposal to make a gift of £1,000,000 from the sterling funds in London to the British Government for the prosecution of the war, or alternatively to ship two or three cargoes of produce without payment being asked, was considered by the Chamber of Commerce today. The proposal, which was made by Mr J. A. C. Allum, had been considered in committee and communicated to the Associated Chambers of Commerce. A letter from the Associated Chambers stated that the New Zealand Farmers’ Union had not been

particularly sympathetic toward the suggestion for the shipment of produce. on the ground that it might interfere with commitments entered into by the Government. The chamber decided to ask the Associated Chambers to approach the Government with a view to sending the produce, which was considered better than drawing from the sterling funds. It was suggested that the gift be used for buying aeroplanes.
