GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS
Nominations for all events of the Matamata Racing Club’s Winter meeting on July 20 close tomorrow (Friday) at 5 p.m., with Blomfield and Co., Auckland, and at 9 p.m. with the secretary (Mr B. C. Taylor), Matamata. Riding at Trentham H. Wiggins will be riding at the Wellington meeting, and among his mounts are Hunting Royal, City Song and Blonde Princess. Dictate The only horse at present in training at Trentham who has been entered for any of the leading events at the Grand National meeting is Dictate. Change of Stables Globe Trotter, formerly trained by H. Telford, is now an inmate of W. H. Dwyer’s stable at Wanganui. As a two-year-old he won four races and this term he has three wins and a second to his credit. Dungarvan Amiss It was hoped that Dungarvan’s previous bleeding would have no recurrence, but as he bled again at Dannevirke on Saturday he might not now be persevered with much longer. Royal Dance Royal Dance has been purchased by Mr J. H. Greenhead ,of Rotorua, who formerly raced Erination, and is racing Foodlight. Royal Dance has been difficult to train since his accident, but may come right after a spell. Schooling Brilliantly Turaki schooled brilliantly over six hurdles at Riccarton on Saturday morning, and it would therefore seem more likely for him to contest the hurdles races at Trentham in preference to the steeplechases. On the Improve Galteemore made his initial appearance as a hurdler at Woodville on Saturday and shaped satisfactorily coming from well back to run third. He has, however, seldom shown his best form on heavy tracks Not For Trentham Streamline, the winner of the GreaNorthern Hurdles, was not nominated for any race at the Wellington meeting, but he has been accorded an entry for the Grand National Hurdles, though not for the Grand National Steeplechase. Lived on Channel Islands Mr H. H. Pharazyn, the owner of the Wellington Centennial Cup winner, Old Bill, and Mr W. Stratton, former secretary to the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, and later of St. Heliers, Auckland, were residents of the Channel Islands, which have been occupied by the Germans. Poutatau’s Credentials The subsequent form of Etla, who won a double at the Hastings winter meeting, enhances the merit of Poutatau’s three lengths maiden win ever Etla at Napier Park. Poutatau is a Trial Plate candidate at Trentham. Hastings Candidate The promising Hastings maiden Gold Court has been suffering from a cold since making a forward showing in his first and only start at the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting. He may race at the hunt fixture at Hastings this week. Neck and Neck With two winners at the Dannevirke Hunt meeting, H. Dulieu drew level with I. Tinsley in the trainers’ premiership, each now having produced 46 winners for the season Dulieu is carrying the battle into Tinsley’s territory this week, having a good team engaged at the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s meeting at Hastings. Rotorua Nominations The Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt fixture will be staged at Arawa Park, Rotorua, on July 27 and on the Monday, July 29, the Rotorua Racing Club will hold a special meeting for patriotic purposes. Nominations for both meetings will close tomorrow, Friday, at 5 p.m. with Blomfield and Co., Auckland, and at 9 p.m. with the secretary (Mr E. La Trobe Hill, Box 105, Rotorua. Making Good Progress With a continuation of easy tracks Quadroon is going along nicely in his work at Awapuni and will be a fit horse for his Trentham engagements. He has shown of his best form at Trentham in the winter, and although it is always possible that he will break down during the running of a race he is confidently expected to do well at next week’s meeting. Gaelic Song Gaelic Song put up a good performance to dead-heat with El Meynell on Saturday, as it was her first start since Feilding at Easter. She showed good form in the autumn, one of her successes being in the Champion Hack Cup at Wellington. Gaelic Song is in the Whyte Handicap on the minimum, but it is perhaps significant that she has not been rehandicapped, whereas Hagen, for winning a hack sprint, has been given another 31b. Opened His Aecount Squeers, who won the Takapau Novice Stakes at Woodville last Saturday. is a three-year-old thick-set black colt by Colossus from the Hunting Song—Trebeli mare Hunt’s Up, hence a full-brother to that useful galloper Top Row and a member of the same family as the New Zealand Cup winner Downfall, Finora, Finelli, etc. He was secured privately for his breeder, Miss M. B. Lawrie, by Mrs I. Hoare, of Palmerston North, last July, and he has had only four starts to date.
After a Long Spell The five-year-old gelding Happy Night, by Nightmarch from Gay Round, has been recommissioned at Riccarton after an absence of nearly two years, during which he has been spelled in North Canterbury. He is now under the care of J. McLean, who will probably try him as a hurdler. When trained by C. Emerson Happy Night could always show plenty of speed on the tracks, but was very disappointing in most of his races. Gay Round is by Gay Lad from Prayer Wheel, dam of Entreaty, dam of Phar Lap. Kerry Bay Kerry Bay, who won the A.J.C. Hurdles at Randwick recently, is an eight-year-old stallion and he has succeeded over fences on practically all the principal tracks. In addition he has had a season at the stud. After racing in Victoria last winter he was returned to Sydney as broken down, and his owner, Mr E. E. D. White, decided to give him a season at the stud, where he served 20 mares. His forelegs were treated at the same time, and he was put back into work a few weeks prior to his win at Randwick under lease to his trainer, E. Hush. Kerry Bay will now be sent to Melbourne to contest the Grand National Hurdles at Flemington on July 5. He will then be returned* to Sydney for a spell, and will take up stud duty again. He is a son of Bill, and is the only representative of that horse racing from a thoroughbred mare. Bill was by Larkspur, a son of Spearmint. Another Stable Double The Awapuni trainer J. J. Waller, who is now concentrating his efforts on the preparation of horses for racing, brought off a double for the second time this winter at Dannevirke last Saturday. The earlier double was Aurora’s Star and Sleeveless at the Manawatu meeting in May, and on Saturday Gaelic Song dead-heated in the Kaitoke Handicap and Anita Foe won the Greenhills Hack Cup. Gaelic Song and Anita Foe were both practically fresh horses on Saturday. Gaelic Song was having her first start since she failed when favourite for the Oroua Hack Cup at Feilding at Easter, and she was making her debut in open class. Anita Foe resumed at Otaki the previous Saturday following a spell since the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. It was therefore a highly creditable training performance. The four horses associated in these doubles are engaged at Trentham next week. • Sleeveless, Aurora’s Star, and Gaelic Song are in the Whyte Handicap and Anita Foe is in the Te Aro Handicap on the first day. It is somewhat surprising that the stable did not nominate one of the horses for the Stewards’ Handicap, which is the second ‘leg’ of the first day’s flat double.
