MAN ON SUBVERSION CHARGE (By Telegraph.—special to Times) AUCKLAND. Wednesday Pleading not guilty to a charge of publishing a subversive statement in a speech made at a street meeting on May 10, Alexander Drennan. waterside worker, was committed for trial by Mr F. 11. Levien, S.M. In entering his plea, the defendant said he had included nothing in his speech which was more subversive than opinions -which had found thenway into the daily press one! other publications. The conclusions he had drawn were, he considered, valid and reasonable, ancl the arguments must be taken as a whole. He asked the magistrate to dismiss the charge because he did not think a jury in a democratic country like New Zealand would find him guilty. Bail of £75 was allowed, with a surety for a similar amount.
