THE WAR SITUATION

EARLY STATEMENT AND DEBATE POSITION OF THE FRENCH FLEET MR CHURCHILL EAGER TO GIVE INFORMATION (Official Wireless) (Received July 3, 11.40 a.m.) RUGBY, July 2 Mr C. R. Attlee informed the House of Commons that it is impossible to indicate the date when the Prime Minister, Mr Churchill, will be in a position to make a full statement on the war situation. It might not be this week, but Mr Churchill is most anxious to give the House all possible information and will do so as soon as it is practicable and advisable in the public interest. Mr Attlee was pressed by Mr H. B. Lees-Smith (Labour) and others on the importance of an early statement. He reiterated the Prime Minister’s desire to keep the House and country informed. He understood that there was a desire that the statement, when it was made, should be followed by a debate, and it w r ould be for decision at that time whether such subsequent debate should be in public or a secret session. Replying to a question on the French Navy, Mr Attlee said the Government was fully alive to the importance of encouraging and assisting to the utmost all French forces able and willing to continue the struggle against Germany and Italy, and was devoting urgent attention to the matter. Mr Anthony Eden told the House that units of the Polish and Czech armies had arrived in Britain and were being reorganised. These units were very welcome reinforcements in the struggle against the common enemy.
