RACING

GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS (By “Martian ') Xamara and Silver Quex are to be treated to a fairly lengthy spell. Plana For Slayer According to present intentions, Slayer will have his next outing in the Wellington Steeplechase next month. Auckland Entries Entries for future classic races of the Auckland Racing Club are due at 5 p.m. on Friday, with the secretary (Mr W. S. Spence), P.O. Box 852, Auckland. Taranaki Classic Entries for the Taranaki Stakes (of £426—6 furlongs), to be run at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting, 1941, close with the secretary (Mr C. B. Webster), P.O. Box 33, New Plymouth, at 9 p.m. on Friday. Won £I6OO in Stakes The Railway Handicap winner, Bronwin, is to be treated to a lengthy spell following her recent lapse of form. This season she accounted for the highly satisfactory sum of £I6OO in stakes. To Be Tried Again Mazir is to be given a further trial and has arrived back at Takanini to enter on another preparation. When he went amiss some time ago it was considered that he had seen the last of the race track. Waipa Acceptances Acceptances for all events of the Waipa Racing Club are due on Friday at 5 p.m. with Blomfield and Co., Auckland, and at 8 p.m. with the secretary (Mr J. G. Wynyard), Te Awamutu. The fine list of nominations points to highly satisfactory acceptances. Jack Tar Jack Tar is to fulfil his engagement at the Waipa meeting on Saturday week, but will have to show improvement on latest efforts to make amends. He looks well and has been doing everything required of him in his track essays and if a surprise is recorded in the Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu it is quite on the cards it may come from this direction.

Very Glad Very Glad gave his best exhibition for some time when he dead-heated with Trig Station in the Ngaruawahia Cup here on Saturday and his excellent showing in the heavy ground should increase his circle of admirers for the Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu on Saturday week, in which he is handily placed with 7.8.

Opoho Makes Amends Opoho made amends for recent disappointments when he won the Whatutu Hurdles at Hastings on Saturday, his initial success of the season following five minor placings. On the score of breeding Opoho has much to commend him as he is by Defoe from Azure Sky, by Kilboy from Golden Sky, by San Fran, and he traces back to the imported Juliet. Bells of Bow A line through the forward running of Bells of Bow in the Winter Steeplechase on the final day of the Great Northern meeting will ensure the Little England gelding a following in the G. W. Park Steeplechase at Te Awamutu on Saturday week. At Ellerslie he went to within a length and a half of All Irish and his rise of 131 b to 9.13 should not prove his capabilities. Chance To Make Amends The consistent Dauber will have a chance to make amends for his recent Ellerslie failures in the big steeples at the approaching Waipa meeting. On the second day of the Great Northern he was unfortunate to fall over another horse and on the final day put up a meritorious performance to finish third in the Winter Steeplechase to All Irish and Bells of Bow. This season he has started on 16 occasions for three wins, as many seconds and five thirds.

Sick and Wounded Benefit The decision of the Waikato Racing Club to stage a special patriotic meeting at Te Rapa will provide a splendid opportunity for the augmentation of the Sick and Wounded Soldiers’ Fund and with fine weather on the day the occasion should attract a large crowd to Waikato headquarters, especially as the worthy object of the cause should encourage owners to co-operate wholeheartedly in providing large and interesting fields

Starting Methods The secretary of the New Zealand Racing Owners, Breeders and Trainers’ Association has received advice from Mr A. M. Mcßeath, secretary of the Racing Conference, that the remit of the association relative to allowing starters discretionary power as to the method of starting races is covered by a remit from the Manawatu Racing Club. The remit will come before conference at the annual meeting in Wellington on July 12. The request was for an amendment to Rule 280, clause 2. to give starters authority to use either the walk-in or “standing" start. The association circularised all racing clubs on the question and the secretary states that a large number of North Island clubs replied favouring the proposal. Extra Permit Sought Among clubs seeking an extra permit for the 1940-41 season is the Te Aroha Jockey Club and this progressive country body is thoroughly deserving of every consideration by the Dates Committee. One of the leading provincial clubs of the Dominion. offering in stakes at its annual two-day fixture appreciably more than a number of metropolitan bodies, the Te Aroha Club has certainly a strong case to offer for the consideration of conference.
