SERVICE TO RAILWAYS

WELLINGTON OFFICER RETIRES (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday The stationmaster at Wellington during the busiest period experienced by the Railway Department for many years, Mr A. Orton, has retired on superannuation, after completing 40 years’ service. He was appointed stationmaster at Wellington on May 16, 1938, and was in charge of the station during the exceptionally busy months which followed the opening of the Centennial Exhibition last November. Special troop trains, intermingled with heavy holiday traffic, added to his responsibilities. Mr Orton’s successor is Mr R. S. Allwright, formerly stationmaster at Wanganui.
