A year of steady progress, which was considered to be satisfactory from every angle, was reviewed at the annual meeting of St. Andrew’s Church last evening. The vicar, the Rev. C. W. Chandler, presided over a good attendance or parishioners. The difficulty of church nuance owing to accumulated debts was detailed by the vicar in opening his report. He compared the position of the parish today with that which obtained prior to 1934. The gross Income over the past five years had been £5460, compared with £4l9d during the previous live years. The position was therefore more secure than it had ever been in the parish. On the spiritual side, the ngures were also encouraging, said the vicar. There had been more acts or Communion, the total of 4 9-89 for the past year being the biggest number since 1932. “I have made these statistical comparisons not because I want to take any or the credit, but because I wish to show that despite the Tears or some peopip with regard to the detrimental effect that my outspokenness on vital social and world problems may have upon the parish, no appreciable decline In any department or the Church’s life is indicated,” said Mr Chandler. Diamond Jubilee Next Year Despite the progress made, the parish F still had an overdraft, added the vicar. I

Next year, 1941, would mark the occasion of the Church’-s diamond jubilee. Hut for the war, he believed that the overdraft could have been wiped off as well as enough money raised to build a new vicarage. There was need Tor the support of various patriotic efforts, but not at the expense of the Church. The vicar stated that he had made over 1100 visits since December, 1-9:38. Thanas were extended to the members of the vestry and the treasurer, Mr R. S. Entrwi'Stle. (Reference was made to the s-atisf factory condition of such organisations as the Mothers’ Union, Girls’ Friendly Society. Servers’ Guild, Bible Classes, Sunday School, Tennis Club, Ladies’ Guild, and Bellringers’ Choir. The Rev. G. J. M. Craib, who had been assistant curate for the past two years, was about to leave, said the vicar. As a fellow priest he had worked well and loyally, and there was little doubt that he would do good work for the Church during the full; term or his ministry. The vicar concluded with a reference to St. Peter’s School. He had continued as chaplain of the school, and round it a valuable connection In every way. The sum of £29 had been paid through the parish quotas for mission's. Only through the help or the school was it possible to have an assistant curate. The report of the vicar’s warden, Mr C. W. Boyce, stated that the vestry had experienced a trying year in connection with finance, but the position had much improved In that all outstanding accounts had been paid.
