HIGHWAYMEN ACTIVE
POLICE ROUND-UP AT MADRID STILL POLITICAL UNREST (Times Air Mail Service) MADRID, March 5 An epidemic of highway robberie* and hold-ups in the suburbs of Madrid has been causing the police a great deal of trouble recently. Travellers’ cars coming into the city over the bleak mountain roads have been stopped; in some cases drivers have been shot when they refused to pull up. Thirty-three men were arrested yesterday in the suburbs by the shock police. In their possession were found many unexploded hand grenades, which had been picked up on the battlefields round the city, and many revolvers. There is still a considerable amount of political unrest in the capital, mainly owing to unemployment. Bomb explosions and terrorist activities have been increasing since Christmas when the hard weather increased the sufferings of the ill-clad and ill-fed population. Several terrorists were arrested and shot last week.
