OHAUPO FAREWELL

MR F. R. LACON HONOURED RAILWAY RETIREMENT A gathering of some 60 Ohaupo residents was held in the Town Hall on Thursday night, the occasion being a farewell to Mr F. R. Lacon, who has retired from the Railways Department after nearly 35 years’ service. The chair was taken by Mr S. J. Rawlinson. Those present stood in silence as ’a mark of respect to the late Prime Minister. After a number of loyal toasts had been honoured, eulogistic references were made to the good qualities and geniality of the guest of the evening and the general regret felt at his departure. The speakers were the chairman and Messrs P. Gavan, M. Quealy, J. Anderson, E. McAulney, J. Gibson and S. H. Price. The presentation of a travelling bag and a cheque from Mr F. Sittaner, an old friend, was made by the Stationmaster, Mr Evans. Mr F. R. Lacon replied in humorous vein, and also expressed his regret at leaving the district. During his residence in Ohaupo Mr Lacon was associated with many social institutions. He had been a prominent member of the Ohaupo Orphans’ Club since its inception. Mr J. Battersby, Hamilton, was at the piano, and musical items were given by Messrs B. Martin, P. Te Wiri, J. Mill, J. Battersby.
