WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
NAWTON-ROTOK AURI A good attendance marked the April meeting of the Nawton-Roto-kauri Women’s Institute, and it was pleasing to note that a number of nominations was received for new members. Members were reminded ot' the Group meeting to be held in Bledisloe Hall, Hamilton, on April 30, at 10.30 a.m. The committee reported the election of Mrs C. White as treasurer, and the re-election of Mrs Harris as secretary. A fund was opened to obtain money for the purpose of sending parcels to overseas soldiers. A competition consisting of a written account of the Institute trip to Rotorua, in February, was won by Mrs Elvie. Mrs Sanders was successful in winning a comparison competition organised by Mrs Elvie. The usual monthly competitions were won as follows:—Best bloom from the garden, Mrs Curtis 1, Mesdames Hewitt and Sanders (equal) 2; embroidered underskirt, Mrs Terry 1, Mrs Glover 2. A pleasant feature of the afternoon was the presentation to Mrs Harris by the members of a small gift in appreciation of her many years of untiring service as secretary of the Institute. HILLCREST The president, Mrs J. H. Morley, presided over a fair attendance at the April meeting of the Hillcrest Women’s Institute in Nixon Street Hall. A vote of deepest sympathy was recorded at the passing of the late Prime Minister, members standing in silence. « The motto for the month was, “Kind hearts are more than coronets.” Mrs W. Haines was elected vice-president, Mrs T. Barnett secretary, Mrs E. Wright treasurer, and one new member was enrolled. Letters were received from Ohaupo and Te Pahu inviting Hillcrest Women’s Institute to their respective birthdays. Mrs Morley would appreciate it very much if all the members of Hillcrest would send along cakes, scones and fillings for sandwiches, etc. to the Winter Show Hall next Saturday, April 13, to help cater for the soldiers on week-end leave. Mesdames Haines and Barnett will attend the annual Waikato Federation meeting as delegates from Hillcrest. Mrs Haines read Miss Kane’s monthly letter in the Home and Country and also gave a good report on the group meeting. Mrs Morley expressed her appreciation to the members who helped at the card evenings, thus enabling us to send in a donation to the fund for the fighting services. Competitions for the month resulted as follows:—Best bloom, Mrs Campbell; apple short cake, Mrs Gordon 1, Mrs Campbell 2; thrift article, Mrs Gordon 1, Mrs Lomas 2.
The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Barker, Campbell and Gordon.
WARDVILLE Mrs Schaare presided at the annual meeting of the Wardville Women’s Institute, when there was a good attendance. The members of the Institute paid a tribute to the late Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, by standing in silence for one minute. The motto was, “A cheerful heart is like a sunny day, good for everybody.” The annual report and balance sheet showed that the year had been very satisfactory- Mrs Schaare was returned as president, and the following officers were elected:—Secretary, Mrs Wallace; treasurer, Miss Elliott; sales table, Mrs Ingley; competitions, Miss Lockyer; committee, Mrs Stark, Mrs Randle, Mrs Kilpin, Mrs Hollis, Mrs Newson. Mrs Schaare thanked the members for their help and co-operation during the year. , Three parcels were collected ready to be despatched to the soldiers. Mrs Schaare was appointed delegate to the Waikato East Federation meeting to be held in Matamata. The roll call: “A first-aid hint,” was well responded to. The presentation of points prizes for the year was made as follows: — Home competitions, Mrs Hughes; cookery, Mrs Hughes; best flower, Mrs McKinna. Competitions for the day resulted as follows:—Best flower, Mrs McKinna 1, Mrs Stark 2, Mrs Franich, 3; oat cakes, Mrs Hamilton. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Ingley and Mrs Lockyer. EUREKA The annual meeting of the Eureka Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently, when Mrs Harington presided over a good attendance. Mrs Harington extended a cordial welcome to Mrs Buckland, a member of the Melville Institute. The president gave a brief summary of activities undertaken by members during the preceding year. Miss M. Hunter, secretary, presented a satisfactory report and Miss H. Saleman presented the balance sheet. They were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The following members were elected to the committee for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs F. Harris; secretary, Miss H. Saleman; treasurer, Mrs R. Hinton; vice-presi-dents, Mrs Harington and Mrs Saward; press correspondent, Miss N. Johns; committee, Mesdames Harris, Harington, Saward, Hinton, Larsen, Stubbs and Misses M. Hunter, H. i Saleman and N. Johns. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring president and secretary. Mrs Harris and Miss Saleman were appointed delegates to the annual Federation meeting to be held in Hamilton. Two parcels were sent to soldiers. Owing to members deciding to turn the Institute into a working bee for the soldiers it was decided not to have any competitions for the ensuing year. The points prize for the year was won by Mrs Larsen with Mrs L. Masters second. Competitions for the day resulted as follows: —Bowl of flowers, Mrs L. Masters 1, Mrs Harington and Mrs Larsen (equal) 2; plate of scones, Mrs Larsen 1, Mrs A. Powdrill 2. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames Tong and Stubbs.
