CONSTRUCTION IN BRITAIN SUPPLY OF MUNITIONS (United Frew Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON. March 5 “We started this war with nine ordnance factories against three when the last war began.” said Earl Stanhope, Lord Privy Seal, in his review in the House of Lords of the employment situation. A large number of other factories was under construction. When completed they would require a large amount of additional labour. In additional construction by the Government £50.000,000 had been involved, and in 400 cases extensions to the works of private firms had been approved. It was hoped to produce 14,000,000 tons of steel this year, against 8,000,000 available in 1914. We were producing shells at 10 times the rate attained after the first six months of the last war. The real problem confronting the Government, said Lord Stanhope, was where men were to be found to complete the work the Government foresaw for factories that would be coming into production.
