BAY OF PLENTY SUFFERS

WHAKATANE FLOODED Wash-outs and flooding occurred on the Whakatane-Taneatua road, and the road to Opotiki was blocked. Traffic from Rotorua is passing via White Pine Bush, the road near the Whakatane West railway station being impassable. At high tide on Sunday the flood waters of the river washed the edge of the main street of Whakatane, and a rise of another inch or two would have meant the flooding of shops. Farmlands were flooded in places to a depth of 3ft. or 4ft., but little damage resulted. Several motorcars which became stranded on the flooded roads were rescued before the water reached its maximum height.
