WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

FAIRFIELD The February meeting of the Fairfield Women’s Institute had a poor attendance owing to the uncertain weather. Mrs Davy, the president, welcomed new members and visitors. After the usual business had been dealt with, nominations for the new president and committee were handed in for the election next month. Arrangements were finalised for the picnic to Okauia Hot Springs. Matamata.

Mrs Cole was judged the winner of the handkerchief made from a salt-bag. Afternoon tea brought a pleasant afternoon to a close

LICHFIELD The president, Mrs Wooderson, i presided at the monthly meeting of the Lichfield Institute when there was a good attendance. Mrs Wooderson won the competition with Mrs Burgess second. Mrs Pepperell served afternoon tea. TE UKU BRANCH The February meeting of the Te Uku Women’s Institute took place in the Memorial Hall. The president, Mrs G. Dent, presided over a good ! attendance of members. The resignation of Miss Mary | Featherstonhaugh as treasurer was received with regret and Miss Peggy ! Lumsden was nominated to fill her place. A gift of an inscribed fountain pen was forwarded to Miss Crabb, who had left the district since the last meeting. Miss Crabb had acted as librarian to the district library for many years and her services were greatly appreciated. A presentation of a pyrex dish was also made to Mrs Bleakley on the occasion of her recent marriage.

A travel talk on “A Farmers’ Union tour of England and the Continent” was given by Mrs Wyatt. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. An auction of produce and other gifts brought by members to help the soldiers’ comfort funds was held with highly satisfactory results. Competition results were:—French marigolds, Mrs Moore 1. Mrs De'Ath 2: laundered supper cloth, Mrs Mead 1. Mrs Brcmwicu 2; best bloom, Miss Mead 1, Miss Sutton 2. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Bromwich, De'Ath, Cleland and Banks.
