EXPORT APPLES
SHIPPING SPACE AVAILABLE (Special to Times) HASTINGS, Tuesday Shipping space for • the export of Cox’s Orange apples is likely to be made available this month, according to advice received in official quarters in Hastings. The news has caused some surprise, in view of statements by fruit officials in Wellington that there was absolutely no prospect of export before the beginning of April at the very earliest. In some quarters the opinion was held that there would be no export at all this season. The space made available has not been made known, but there are grounds for believing that it might be reasonably substantial. Arrangements have been made for growers in Hawke’s Bay, Nelson and Marlborough to put up export packs, so that it will be these three fruitgrowing areas which will participate in the benefits of what export there is. The senior Government orchard inspector in Hawke’s Bay, Mr G. H. Mclndoe, said today that extra fancy and fancy grades of selected varieties only would be exported. In Cox’s, all fruit of 163 to 252 count would be packed as for export. Dunns that were sufficiently advanced to pack would also be received, the export sizes for this variety being 163 to 180.
