NEW ZEALANDERS
BELIEVED TO BE RESCUED SEVERAL FROM AUCKLAND The 12,000-ton combination raider, supply and prison vessel Altmarck was supposed to have reached Bremerhaven on January 25 with 300 British seamen as prisoners. The Altmarck was the Admiral Graf Spee’s escort vessel. Nine New Zealanders are believed to have been aboard the Altmarck. They are Mr R. J. Craig, aged 19. Ponsonby; Mr G. J. Lynch, aged 21, Onehunga: and Mr W. J. Wheeler, of Dunedin, all members of the Royal Naval Reserve, who were serving the Doric Star’s defensive armament. Mr David Nicholas, described as an Aucklander, is also said to have been aboard the Doric Star, although he is not mentioned on the crew list. Mr Noel Bevan, of Napier, is believed to have been aboard the Altmarck. and others on the Doric Star not accounted for early were Messrs A. C. Watt and P. J. Bowie, of Wellington. Two New Zealanders aboard the Tairoa were Mr Ryland Pittam. formerly of Okaihau, North Auckland, and Mr jack Blithe, of Coromandel, a member •/. the crew of the Tairoa. who was wounded aboard the Grat Spee. was released at Montevideo and taken to England.
