BOWLERS ON TOP

EAST’S NARROW LEAD MARGIN OF 13 RUNS Three quick wickets to Bright put Claudelands on the defensive, but T. Lyon was not dismayed by the setback and scored with neat singles and braces. Hunt and Carrington were dismissed with simple balls, while Belcher was never comfortable. With a six off Bright, Lyon brought the score to 25 after 40 minutes’ play. After batting confidently from the opening of the innings he swung at a leg break from Bright and had his off stump taken. 29—4—25.

| A quiet period ensued in which ! Davy and Clarke were associated, the | bowling of Cassidy and Bonnar tieing the batsmen down. Scoring J mainly in ones and twos, the pair i carried the total to 50. but just as I things were looking more hopeful j for Claudelands, Davy was dismissed by a great left-handed catch by Bright at mid-wicket. Clarke's careful innings came to it-

an end when Going ran round behind the wicket to hold a good catch off Bright. Cassells then tapped a rising ball on the off and sent the ball into the hands of Bright. 9—7—75.

A brilliant running catch by Bonnar in the long field was responsible for Hemi’s dismissal when he opened his shoulders to Bright. Glennie and Buckland added seven runs before Glennie was clean bowled by Bright. Disastrous Start Hamilton East commenced disastrously when Cassidy was caught behind the wicket off the first ball of the innings. Worse was to follow, P. Jordan having his off levelled shortly after by a gcxd ball from Hemi. Bright was enterprising from the outset and he and Going set to work to consolidate the position. They added 37 runs before Bright, who was scoring fast, went out to a weak shot off Hemi. It was surprising to see Going sent back just after the half century had been passed as he was batting as well as he had this season. His downfall came in attempting a big hit, the batsmen pulling the ball on to his wicket. Innes continued to bat steadily, but with East reauirihg four runs for an innings lead, Lyon got two quick wickets, both clean-bowled. Two overs later a ball from Lyon grazed Innes’ wicket without removing the bail and went for four byes. The best knock of the match came to an end when Innes played over one from Lyon and had his off stump taken, 88—7—34. Bonnar was batting confidently when East declared. Claudelands appealed successfully against the light and did not bat again. Details were:— CLAUDELANDS—First Innings F. Carrington, b Bright 0 T. Lyon, b Bright 25 C. G. Hunt, b Bright 1 J.
