VIOLENT HALT

EXPLOSION STOPS TRAM CAUSE NOT KNOWN NO INJURY TO PERSONS (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday A violent explosion which could be heard more than a mile away brought a tram travelling along Adelaide Road towards the City from Island Bay to a sudden halt at about 9.35 o’clock to-night. Floor boards in the front of the car were torn up, the front window shattered and several other -windows cracked, but the vehicle remained on the tracks. None of the six passengers was injured. The conductor and motorman were taken to their homes suffering from shock. The accident occurred near the junction of Adelaide Road and Chilka Street and caused a delay of about 20 minutes to tram traffic. The damaged car was towed away to the Kilbirnie sheds, where it was reported to have been locked up pending examination by the police. External Cause From the descriptions of the explosion, it appears that it was external and had nothing to do with the mechanism of the tram. There have been instances in the past of children and irresponsible persons placing detonators on the tramlines in Wellington, but no detonator would account for an explosion of such violence. ANOTHER EXPLOSION NO SERIOUS DAMAGE DONE SUSPICION OF DETONATOR (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Another explosion has occurred on the tram tracks, this being in Vivian Street, in the city, shortly after 9 o’clock this morning. Fragments picked up suggest it was caused by a detonator having been placed on the track. The explosion was not nearly so violent as that which occurred in Adelaide Road, one of the suburban tracks, last night. No explanation can be given of the cause of the first explosion, which was violent enough to shatter a number of windows and force up the cabin flooring, but it is evident that it was caused by an explosive charge on the track. The car concerned in this morning’s explosion suffered no damage and there was no delay to the service.
