CLAUDELANDS SLUMPS

OLD BOYS’ EASY VICTORY HIGGINSON RETURNS TO FORM After losing six wickets for 120 runs on the first day, Claudelands slumped badly when its match with Old Boys was resumed and the side was out for 145. Belcher and Cleave, who were unconquered, resumed batting and took the total past 140 before being dismissed. The last three batsmen, including T. Lyon, failed to score and Old Boys, with time in its favour, had an easy task in overtaking its opponent on the first innings. Old Boys had 228 up well before 6.30, securing the decision by a margin of 73 runs. Aitken and West opened for Old Boys, the pair adding 66 for the first wicket. Both commenced cautiously but Aitken soon opened out to provide his usual useful quota of runs. A solid display was given by West, who seems to favour the opening position, and he revealed that form which earned him a place in the Hawke Cup eleven earlier in the season. His defence is an assest to any side and he and Aitken appear to be an ideal pair. The Claudelands attack was in the hands of Hemi and Ewan, when the innings began but, after each had sent down seven overs, Hunt relieved Hemi and in his first over had Aitken leg before. Vigorous Batting Clough batted vigorously for his 62 and, with Harding, looked like making another stand. However, Harding, when lie appeared set, swung at a short delivery from Belcher and Hemi at fine leg dived to take a magnificent catch. Harding’s was .an unfortunate dismissal as he promised to continue the fine form he displayed earlier in the season. Old Boys had passed Claudelands’ total when Fraser opened out to Hunt and was clean bowled. Clough was still batting merrily and with the objective reached, proceeded to punish the bowling until Hemi took his off stump clean out of the ground. Of the later batsmen, W. Higginson was the most attractive. For the first time this season he gave a really sound display and his 29 not i out included two well-earned sixes off T. Lyon. This knock should serve to give Higginson the necessary confidence for more double-figure efforts. Most of the tail-enders were victims of T. Lyon’s accurate length, and, apart from Higginson, none reached dounle figures. Details:— CLAUDELANDS —First Innings H. Lyon, c Higginson, b Harding 25 T. A. Ewan, c sub, b Crabb .... 42 D.
